GROUPS
This chapter is called the Ashtaka-Varga or the group of eight because calculations for this Vargahave to be made in respect of eight group's viz., the seven planets and the Ascendant. It is with reference to these eight group calculations that events in a man's life are predicted after determining the benefit and adverse influence that the various planets cause during their transit through the twelve sign of the Zodiac or the twelve houses of a natal chart.
The Ashtaka –Varga signifies the eight sources of energy for each planet, including the Ascendant. Rahu and Ketu are omitted from this system because of their shadowy nature.
To prepare the Ashtaka- Varga, one should have the Rashi horoscope of the native. It is only with reference to the Rashi chart that Ashtka-Varga horoscope can be prepared and results predicted therefrom.
The Ashtaka-Varga horoscope consists of 8 parts: the one for each planet and the eighth is the total of all the planets.

The first seven are called the Bhinnashstka-Varga in contrast to Sarvashtaka-Varga.
The method of preparing the Ashtaka-Varga.horoscope is like this.
Take the planets in order one by one from the Rashi horoscope of the person and in a new horoscope from a place some mark or point in the respective house as mentioned in the following rules and then total the number of marks of points and place the total number in that house for that planet's Ashtaka-Varga. horoscope. That would be that planet's Ashtaka-Varga. and so on for each planet.
These marks or points are called the benefit points in each house.
The benefice points in any house will not exceed eight. The number of benefice points deducted from 8 is the number of malefic aspects in that house.

Total the number of Marks of points in the Aries House Of each planet Ashtaka-Varga.and place the entire total number in the Aries House of the SarvashtakaVarga Horoscope and soon for every other House up to the Pisces House.
General Effects According to the Points in each House:
- If there are more than four points in any house, the planets give good results when passing through that house.
- If there are 5, 6 or 7 points in the houses, the planets bless the natives with progressively more beneficial and truthful results when passing through that house.
- If there are 1, 2 or 3 points only in the house, the planets will cause no good results when transiting through that house.
- If there are no points in the house, the planets cause diseases, dishonor and difficulties and tensions when passing that house.
- If there are 4 points in the house, the planets give mixed results, both good while transiting through that house.
- A planet with one point may cause diseases, misery, discomforts and make one wonder.
- A planet with 2 points may produce mental agony, censure from government authorities and losses in business, etc.
- A planet with 3 points produces bodily deprivation, discomforts, and mental uneasiness.
- A planet with 4 points produces mixed pain, pleasure, expense and enhancement of income and increase of financial, assets.
- A planet with 5 points causes procurement of good clothes, luxuries, children, learning and wealth.
- A planet with 6 points produces a good personality, good character, wealth, and riches, victory in conflate and war, fame and strength.
- A planet with 7 points produces honor, titles, horses, carriages and wealth.
- A planet with 8 points produces glory distinction and other accompaniments, name and fame and distinction.
- A planet gives always good results in his Varga, in any house with 5 or more points and otherwise gives no good results.
- A planet is positively harmful while moving to a house with no points.
- All planets in their houses of exaltation, in friendly houses or other benefice houses and also in the Kendras and Trikonas produce perverse and inconvenient results if the houses they move in contain less than four points.
- Planets in bad positions and depression or inimical houses, give good results if they move in houses containing more than four points.
- If Saturn passes through a house with no points, he gives diseases, danger from enemies and troubles to the father and the other relations who are represented by the different planets.
Experience shows that the Sarvashtaka-Varga may be used as a confirmation of the results of every bhava in a horoscope, Obtained while assessing the nature of a nativity according to the rules mentioned in the previous chapters where the number of points is excellent, that bhava is strong. But there is not much advantage in it, if the allied bhava are not equally strong, e.g., the 11th house may get even as many as 50 points but if the 2nd and 9th houses do not get an equally good number and if the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses get more, the results will be nil.
The Ascendant must get more points than any other bhava.
The 6th, 8th, and 12th bhava must get less than those in the Ascendant while all other benefice houses must get more than what the evil houses get, but still less than the Ascendant, and the lord of the Ascendant should get more points in his Ashtaka-Varga than any other planet in his.
Positive effect
This is an excellent condition showing that native will be successful in life. The following rule may be adapted to decide whether a person will be able to save or not. The 2nd, 11th, and 9th houses speak of the wealth of some sort or other, and the total number of points in these houses must be higher than those in the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses, for these houses speak of debts, misfortunes, etc.
There are so many other things that can be considered with the help of the Ashtaka-Varga., such as the direction which will be most helpful to the native, the longevity of a person, the three divisions of life, the father's and mother's death, etc.
